About School of Graduate Studies

The School of Graduate Studies was established to co-ordinate all graduate programmes in the University. With the focus of continual learning and development in the maritime and allied fields, the Graduate School was set up to provide higher level education and training that is responsive to the needs of the maritime industry and the society at large. The School in addition facilitates the development of new graduate programmes in all faculties of the University.

Through comprehensive graduate programmes with contemporary curriculum, establish a centre of excellence in graduate education that provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills that ensures our students are competitive and ready for challenging careers in industry, teaching, or research.

General Functions of the School of Graduate Studies

The general functions of the School of Graduate Studies are as follows:

  • Liaise with Deans and Department Heads on all matters relating to graduate studies.
  • Facilitate the admission process of graduate students and keep records of all graduate students.
  • Improve the quality of graduate curriculum though meaningful and comprehensive review.
  • Establish guidelines for effective mentoring and professional development of graduate students
  • Improve viability and visibility of graduate programmes and faculty
  • Design and run graduate programmes
  • Facilitate all inter-university collaboration at the post-graduate level.

Post-Graduate Programmes

 MA in Ports and Shipping Administration (with University of Ghana)

 Aim: To provide applicants with the relevant managerial/administrative skills in order to effectively work in maritime and allied organisations. It is intended to equip participants with the requisite knowledge for efficient performance in policy formulation, planning, implementation, co-ordination, monitoring and control of activities related to the sector.

Objectives: The objectives of the programme are to train graduates to:

  • Acquire expert knowledge for efficient management of ports, terminals, international shipping and multimodal transport.
  • Be familiar with global trends and challenges in administration and managerial practices in the maritime industry.
  • Be familiar with the various laws and disciplines associated with ports, shipping and multimodal transport operations.
  • Appreciate the economics, safety, security and environmental issues associated with maritime transport and allied activities.
  • Be adequately equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills for understanding policy issues pertaining to maritime transport at both domestic and global levels.

Eligibility Criteria:

A good First Degree with at least a Minimum of 2nd Lower Division in any of the following:

  • Social Sciences; Business Administration; Maritime Discipline and other related Disciplines from a recognized University, plus not less than two (2) years post-qualification working experience in Logistics or Maritime related organization.

or

  • The highest grade Certificate of Competency for unrestricted service as Master Mariner or Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy.
  • Applicants must submit the following with applications:

    2. A thesis proposal of not more than 500 words

MSc. Bio-Processing Engineering

Today’s issues of climate change and declining fossil fuel reserves are driving the expansion of renewable energy technologies and the production of biofuels and industrial raw materials from crops. A climate-saving and protecting, economically efficient, resources-saving and socially acceptable energy supply is the key challenge of the 21st century.

Aim: To prepare highly qualified engineers capable of finding solutions to technological problems in the renewable energy, environmental and bioprocessing engineering sectors as well as allied processing industries in order to satisfy the needs and desires of society.

Objectives:

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To produce graduates combining technical and scientific skills with an understanding of the environment and land-based industries, who can contribute to the development of renewable resources in urban and rural areas.
  • To equip the graduates with the necessary skills to enable them enter into self-employment by judiciously harnessing and processing natural resources.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must have a good first degree in Engineering with at least second class Lower Division from a recognized University. Applicants with a B.Sc. in the Physical Sciences will be considered if they have at least one (1) year relevant work experience.
  2. Applicants must submit the following with applications:

    2. A thesis proposal of not more than 500 words
    3. Three (3) referee’s reports.

  • To alert participants to major environmental concerns: global, regional and local.
  • To promote, among participants, a holistic and proactive approach to the solution of environmental problems.
  • To familiarise participants with instruments and techniques used for the prediction and measurement of environmental quality.
  • To train participants in the planning and design of engineering works related to the preservation and improvement of the environment.

[I]        DOMESTIC APPLICANTS

All applicants for the 2020/2021 Academic Year admissions are required to use the Regional Maritime University [RMU] online application portal.  The procedure for the online application process is as follows:

[a]       Make appropriate payment of GH¢210.00 or $70.00 at the various sales centers              for the RMU E-Voucher:

[ii]        All Branches of the Ghana Commercial Bank

[iii]       All Branches of Ecobank [foreign and local]

[iv]       All Regional and District Post Offices across Ghana

[b]        The E-Voucher contains the Pin and Serial Number required in completing the                   online form.

[c]        Access the online form by visiting the University’s online admissions portal at                  www.rmu.edu.gh/admissions  soon after payment.

[d]        In completing the online form, students will be required to upload their passport              size photographs.

[e]        A completed form is not considered until it is SUBMITTED.

[g]        Applicants must print out application summary; attach transcriptscertificates                 and all other relevant documents.  These documents should be forwarded to                   the Registrar.

[h]        Candidates are strongly advised to visit Courier Companies in their Countries                   for  assistance towards the return of the application documents [see f].

Accommodation

Gambia Hostel:

The Gambia Hostel is a dedicated hostel for Post-graduate students and upgraders at the Regional Maritime University. It is a 48-bedroom facility located on the campus in a serene and safe environment and only a short walking distance from all lecture, library and laboratory facilities.

Room types and Fees

The Hostel has the following room types available

  • Single room occupancy – Executive Accommodation
  • Single room occupancy – Semi – Executive Accommodation
  • Double room occupancy – Ordinary Accommodation

NB: All rooms are furnished. Executive rooms enjoy dedicated cleaning services. Curtains, blankets and bed sheets are washed for all executive rooms by the University.

Laundry services are provided for students if requested, for a fee.

 Application and allocation of rooms to applicants

  1. Application for accommodation in the hostel is administered in line with the timing of student enrollment and priority is given to new students. Application may be open to old students depending on availability of hostel rooms.
  2. All applicants must fill out an application form and submit it to the registry at the beginning of each study period.
  3. Selection method:
    1. New students: Rooms are offered to paying students based on “first-come-first-serve” basis (subject to room availability).
    2. Continuing/old students: Must apply for Extension of Accommodation if contract/study period has elapsed.
  4. When an applicant receives an offer of a room, it will not be confirmed until 100% of the total fee for the contract period has been received by the Finance Directorate and the room license agreement has been signed (within 7 days of the receipt of the offer or the room will be reallocated to another student). Should an applicant fail to meet any of the conditions set out by Gambia Hostel Management, the room will be reallocated to another student and the deposit will be refunded to you.
  5. In the interests of ensuring that as much space as possible is allocated to the students most in need of support, the categories of offer-holders we consider priorities (in the order given below) are as follows:

i. Applicants with disabilities or other special requirements which would make it hard to find suitable private, rented accommodation at short notice.

ii.  Applicants from member states arriving in Ghana for the first time for graduate studies/upgrading who have no previous experience of Ghana.

iii.  Applicants from non-member states countries arriving in Ghana for the first time for graduate studies/upgrading who have no previous experience of Ghana.

iv.  Applicants from member states with previous experience of Ghana who have already met the academic conditions of their offer and have submitted an application with the specified period.

v.  Applicants from non-member states with previous experience of Ghana who have already met the academic conditions of their offer and have submitted an application with the specified period.

vi. Other applicants that may not fall into any of the categories listed above.

Community

Regional Maritime University is located in an exciting urban area. The University is a walking distance from “The Junction”, a popular outlet mall where there are many shops and activities of interest. The University is a beach property and there are many local beach stalls located a walking distance from the Nungua Campus.

The University has sporting facilities including a pool, basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court and a football field.
