IT IS AN EXCITING TIME TO BE IN THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES WHERE WE ARE BUILDING NEW APPROACHES TO HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES THAT PROMOTE HEALTH AND PREVENT ILLNESS. THE SCHOOL FORMS ONE OF THE EIGHT (8) SCHOOLS OF THE UNIVERSITY
THE SCHOOL HAS DEVELOPED PROGRAMS TO MEET THE KENYA HEALTH MISSION OF SKILLED AND COMPETENT HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL PARTICIPATE IN REALIZATION OF VISION 2030 FOR HEALTH.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN FOOD, NUTRITION AND DIETETICS

The emerging nutrition and health problems pose a need to offer specialized training in the area of nutrition and health in order to provide appropriate advice and services. Currently, sub-Saharan Africa needs more trained expertise in this area to serve the diversified public health and nutritional needs. Through teaching, research and service this course will help train manpower with the capacity to deal with emerging nutrition and health issues and hence bridge the existing capacity gaps in health and nutrition programmes.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can easily get employment in a wide range of areas including:

  • Government ministries (including but not limited to the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Culture and Social Services, Education)
  • Food industries (such as Kenya Bureau of Standards, Nestle Foods, Uni-Lever)
  • The United Nations and other Non-Governmental organizations (World Vision, UNICEF, OXFAM etc).
  • Academic and research institutions as researchers or trainers/instructors

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN PUBLIC HEALTH

Public health is an approach to health that aims to improve the health of an entire population. One major step in achieving this aim is to reduce health inequities among population groups. The need for capacity building in the field of public health has been compounded by the continued increase in environmental hazards emanating from the rapid urbanization and industrialization due to modern technological advancement. Worldwide, many people continue to suffer from preventable communicable diseases. The labor market demand for health practitioners over the years has not been matched with the existing training opportunities in the country and the region at large, hence ineffectively responding to conditions that affect human population and health. Thi course provides interdisciplinary training and develops the learner’s ability to sensitize knowledge and skills needed to address health problems among populations.
