VALCO HALL is located in the University of Cape Coast (UCC) which is found within the municipality of a regional capital, Cape Coast, Central Region of Ghana along the shores of Atlantic Ocean. The Hall evolved from humble beginnings and now occupies an enviable position in the academic setting of UCC. It had been made known to students right from the start that as a Hall, the pre-requisites for making a positive mark in the University are discipline, hard work and solidarity. The motto of the Hall is ‘First Among Equals’.
The project of building this Hall was financed by the Government of Ghana. It has been a mixed Hall since its inception. The first batch of one hundred and forty (140) male and female students who were non-resident students affiliated to other Halls, freshers of the Hall and Masters’ students admitted during the 1998/1990 and 1990/1991 academic years occupied the Hall on 13th November, 1990, twelve years after the foundation stone for the building was laid.
During the first long vacation following the occupation of the Hall by students, the Hall embarked on internally generated income activities with seed money from the first Hall Master, Professor Kobina Yankson after the University had refused to grant the Hall’s request for a loan. By 1992 the Hall had generated enough income to furnish the Junior and Senior Common Rooms which were just empty spaces at the time of occupation in November, 1990. By 1993, the Hall, through its own internally generated income provided the following:
- Sports facilities – table tennis sets, volleyball court, various sports equipment, track suits for sportsmen/women (the first Hall in UCC to do this).
- Furnishing for the Flats in Block D and H.
- Uniform for workers in the Hall (the first Hall in UCC to do this).
- The institution of the Best Workers Awards (the first in UCC to do this).
- Well furnished, air conditioned library stocked with relevant books assisted partly by the Ashanti Goldfields. So the Hall was therefore self-reliant from the early stages.
The number of students in the Hall rose from five hundred and sixty-two (562) in February 1993, made up of both undergraduate and graduate students. The entire building was completed during the 1995/6 academic year.
The Hall was called the New Hall for some time. It was concurrently called ECOMOG as that was the time Peace Keeping Forces were being sent to Liberia from Ghana. The use of Valco Hall as a name was a decision arrived at by the University authorities, after its suggestion to them by the first JCRC, in recognition of the immense contributions of Valco Aluminium Company towards education in Ghana. It was commissioned on 27th February, 1993 by the then Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Harold Philips. Over the years, the Company has expressed appreciation to the University by way of donation to the Hall, in recognition of the honour done it. In relation to the industrial activities executed by VALCO, the members of this noble Hall are popularly known as Industrialists.
The Hall’s administrative staff made up of the Hall master, Senior Hall Tutor, Tutors, Administrator, Accountant, Administrative Staff, Porters, cleaners and artisans was initially skeletal in number (Tables 2 and 3) but currently they are enough for the management of the Hall. The names of the first Hall executives, their Departments and positions are indicated in table 1. Table 2 shows the names of the first Junior Staff of the Hall.
