THE ASANTE AKYEM CAMPUS AT A GLANCE

Set in a serene semi-urban area almost completely surrounded by mountain ranges creating a friendly climatic aura, the Asante Akyem Campus is the third of the five Campuses of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana. The others being Okwahu, Akuapem, Tema and Kumasi Campuses.

The Campus host the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences comprising the Departments of Nursing and Physician Assistantship. The Faculty offers health training programmes leading to the award of Bachelor’s Degrees in Nursing and Physician Assistantship. The Acting Dean of the Faculty is Dr. Kofi B. Asare and the Departments of Nursing and Physician Assistantship are headed by Dr. Samuel Owusu Akyem and Mr. Daniel Azumah Nayembil respectively. Mr. Frank Owusu Mensah is the Senior Assistant Registrar of the Campus.

Our Education is Unique

We are renowned for providing students with quality education. We focus on Competency-Based Training (CBT) education by blending theory with practice, leading to high cognitive, affective and psychomotor development of the student. The ability to train the mind, heart and hand which is the hallmark of the University finds expression in the products of the faculty. We, therefore, produce highly qualified and competent health professionals in Nursing and Physician Assistantship.

By our motto Discipline in Leadership, we inculcate the proverbial Presbyterian discipline in our students. We equip young men and women with the technical and professional skills needed in the health sector as well as for the socio economic development of the country.

Department of Nursing

Our Nursing students have been obtaining high scores in the Professional Licensure Examinations conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Ghana. The overall percentage score of the students who took part in the 2015 Licensure Examinations was 96.6%. The Licensure Examination is taken by all final year Nursing Students from both public and private in universities in Ghana. The Department of Nursing offers the regular four-year course leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

In the Licensure Examination held in August, 2015, Miss Sandra Enohor Akpobome, a student from the Department of Nursing emerged the best candidate in the Registered General Nursing Licensing Examinations (Written). She received the Dr. Mary Opare Award from the Nurses and Midwifery Council, having passed with distinction in 6 of the courses in the above examination, namely; Medicine and Medical Nursing, Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing, Obstetric Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Public Health Nursing and Surgery and Surgical Nursing. In 2015 a team of Nursing students also participated in and won First Position in the National Buruli Ulcer Endemic Quiz Competition.

Department of Physician Assistantship

The Department of Nursing offers the regular four-year course leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistantship. In addition to the above, the Department also runs the Week-End Mode of the degree programme for practising Physician Assistants.

Students of the department have also performed creditably over the years. Our students presented for the Medical and Dental Council Professional and Licensure Examination have been scoring 100% over the years.

In 2015, a team of students from the Department participated in the Physician Assistantship Students’ Association (Ghana) Quiz Competition and took First Positions in both the Northern Sector and the National Level Competitions. Also in November, 2016 Mr. Bright Bilson, a Level 400 student of the Department of Physician Assistantship was adjudged the Overall Best Student Entrepreneur in Trade, Imports and Exports at the Private Universities Association of Ghana (PUSAG) Conference.

Associations

Our students belong to a number of Associations; among them are the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG), Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG), University Nurses Students’ Association of Ghana (UNSAG), Physician Assistant Students’ Association of Ghana (PASAG), Presbyterian University College Association of Nursing Students (PUCANS).

Our students know what they want. They take every opportunity we offer to explore the profession they are passionate about.

Internship

Within the academic year, students from the Departments of Nursing and Physician Assistantship participate in two main highly-structured internship and clerkship programmes. Much of the student practical work takes place at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, the second largest hospital in the Ashanti Region. In addition, Medical Practitioners, Nurses and other Medical Specialists of the Hospital are supportive of student clinical work as they provide information and professional assistance necessary for the training of students.

Furthermore, the University has number of Memoranda of Understanding with over fifty well-equipped hospitals spread across the country. These hospitals provide support for the effective running of the Clinical Training Programme that is designed to equip our students with the requisite skills.

Hostel Accommodation

The University provides housing to its students, especially Level 100 (first year) students. In view of this, the University has entered into partnership agreements with eight hostel providers at Agogo and its environs. The University ensures that adequate security, sanitation and utility services are provided for students.

Transport Service

Bus shuttle services are also available for students. The buses provide shuttle services for students to move from Hostel to Lectures, other official functions and travel.

Chaplaincy and Life Value Lessons

There is a Chaplaincy and Life Values Promotion Centre which promotes the development of the total person through espousal of Christian principles.

Infrastructure

The Faculty can boast of a well-equipped demonstration room, ultra-modern lecture halls, auditorium and library.

Staffing

The Faculty is adequately staffed with qualified, dedicated and experienced academic and administrative staff who work to promote student academic progress and welfare. The majority of the lecturers are health professionals who share their insider knowledge with students and also serve as their mentors.

Locating the Campus

The Campus is located at Agogo in the Asante Akyem North District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It is on the hills that form part of the Akuapim-Mampong-Gambaga range. It has a very cool climate and a serene environment suitable for studies. The gateway is through Konongo, a well-known market centre which lies on the Accra-Kumasi Road. Konongo is about 220 kilometres from Accra and about 50 kilometres from Kumasi. Agogo is about 15 kilometres from Konongo.
