KNUST Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems

The Supply Chain and Information Systems (SCIS) department is an interdisciplinary department that encompasses three main interrelated areas: Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM), Operations Management (OM) and Information Systems (IS).

Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management involves the integration of business processes across organizations from raw material suppliers through manufacturing and processing to the final customer. Our programmes in this area provides students with the core knowledge related to a wide variety of supply chain activities, including demand planning, purchasing and procurement, inventory control, supply chain coordination, product and service support, information technology, supply chain strategy, etc. Logistics also focuses on the flow of goods and information from the point of origin to the point of consumption and involves transportation, distribution, warehousing, facility location analysis, material handling and packaging, etc.
The Logistics and Supply Chain programme was introduced in 2005 and was the first such programme in the country. Currently, KSB through the SCIS department is mentoring several private and public universities both in Ghana and the sub-region that have also introduced similar programmes.

Operations Management

Every company undertakes some form of operations, which is the transformative process of converting inputs into outputs. Operations management focuses on the analysis, design, implementation, planning, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service processes. Excellence in operational performance has become a key factor to establishing competitive advantage and Ghanaian companies have come to realize this and are now seeking well trained operations managers with the background that our education offers.

Information Systems

The area of Information Systems deals with the design, development, implementation, impact and management of information systems and technologies in organizations. Information Systems have become the backbone of modern businesses. Currently, almost all business functions such as operations, marketing, accounting and finance rely heavily on information systems for developing and maintaining strategic advantage. Thus, information systems have become the key integrator in business processes and in organizations. The department offers programmes in Business Information Technology at the undergraduate level and Management Information Systems at the postgraduate level.
The department was formerly known as the department of Information Systems and Decision Sciences (from 2005 to 2015).
