History Of Ghana Red Cross Society
Red Cross Society is one of the largest volunteer base humanitarian organizations in the world. In Ghana it has about 65,000 volunteers across the country and it is always very important to ensure that the general public becomes aware of what the Red Cross Society does in the lives of its citizens and also make them aware of what the society stands for in the communities.
In line with this, the International Committee of Red Cross as part of their assistance to the Ghana Red Cross supported the society to organize a public dissemination workshop on the 27th of November 2014 for fifteen community members drown five districts in the Eastern Region. (Kweabibirim, Fanteakwa, Atiwa, Akuapem South, and Yilo Krobo).
Participants were taken through the history of the Red Cross, what the International Humanitarian law stands for and its related laws, the mandate of the International Committee of Red Cross, its operational areas, the abuse of the emblems.
They were also educated on the role of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescents and its (IFRC) mandates to assist the vulnerable people in every community in a country. The main functions of IFRC were also explained to the participants so as to know the difference between the mandate of ICRC and that of IFRC.
The history of Ghana Red Cross Society was made know to participants, its origin from the gold coast time 1929 to the time of 1958 (Act 10) when the society had a charter to become Ghana Red Cross Society, the mandate of the society in Ghana and also the numerous achievements that has been achieved over the years with support ICRC and IFRC and other donor agencies.
