DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (ARTS)

Rationale
The Diploma in Education (Arts) is a three academic year programme including a teaching practice and prepares those students who intend to be teachers in secondary schools. The programme is designed to provide access to education and meet the increased demand for teachers nationally and regionally.
Programme Objectives
i) To provide a basis for advanced training in education in both professional and specialized subject areas.
ii) To develop professional training and to develop intellectual and social characteristics of the students to enable them become responsible teachers and leaders within secondary schools.
iii) To develop the capability of students in conducting research in education.
iv) To develop appropriate procedures for investigation and analysis of the secondary school curriculum.
Admission Requirements
The programme is open to students who have passed with a mean grad or at least C (Plain) at KCSE Level. The applicant must also have passed with at least grade C (Plain) in English or Kiswahili. The applicant must have a grade C in the teaching subjects. Admission may be granted to holders of relevant equivalent certificate(s) from institutions recognized by the academic board. An applicant whose mean grade is at least C (Plain) and have bridged in the relevant teaching subjects can qualify for admission. Egerton University Diploma In Education

Egerton University Diploma In Education – Course Structure and Duration

The diploma in education programme shall extend for a minimum period of three academic years including teaching practice.
Programme Structure
1• The students will pursue two subjects taught in secondary schools.
2• They will study professional education core courses.
3• They will undertake teaching practice in the two teaching subjects for a full secondary school term and a project in teaching/learning materials in one of the teaching subjects and for any class.
4• A minimum of 90 credit factors must be covered for one to graduate.

i) The first digit „0‟ represent the programme, in this case diploma.
ii) The second digit, e.g. „1‟ represents the academic year, in this case year one.
iii) The third digit, e.g. 2 represents the semester, in this case semester two.
iv) The fourth digit represents the unit.
The EDCI 0315 is an educational unit in curriculum and instruction taught to the Diploma students in year three, first semester.

Examinations Regulation

All courses will be examined during the semester as continuous assessment, and an end of semester examination as follows:-
i) Continuous assessment shall constitute 30% of the total marks.
ii) Written examination at the end of the semester shall constitute 70% of the total marks.
iii) Pass mark shall be 40%.
iv) Courses which are purely of practical nature and or project shall be examined entirely by continuous assessment.
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.

THE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (PRIMARY)

Rationale
The diploma in Education (Primary) programme is designed to produce teachers with an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, sound professional skills and ability to adapt to the ever-changing Educational needs in Kenya. Its focus is on quality instruction and management of primary schools. The two year course leading to Diploma in Primary Education is aimed at improving the competency of primary school teachers in instruction and managerial skills which is presently largely lacking in public schools. In addition, there is a pool of trained teachers with P1 certificates who do not meet the present minimum requirement for entry into B.Ed primary programme at Egerton University. The programme will therefore provide a suitable bridge for entry into B.Ed primary and further training

Program objectives

The aim of this programme is to improve the quality of primary school instruction and management. The specific objectives of the programme are to:
i) Enhance the teacher‟s subject content and pedagogical knowledge, skills and attitudes.
ii) Enhance teachers‟ ability to handle two of the subject areas taught in primary schools, namely; a) Science, Agriculture and Mathematics b) Social Studies and Languages . Egerton University Diploma In Education
iii) Develop a primary school teacher who is creative and capable of discovering, understanding, controlling and adapting to new technologies.
iv) Enable the primary school teacher to develop the child‟s ability in creative thinking, problem solving and communication skills.
v) Develop a teacher‟s awareness, understanding and commitment to professional ethics, basic human rights and sound environmental.
vi) Develop a teacher‟s capacity to produce and use relevant learning materials.
vii) Enhance a teacher‟s leadership and managerial skills.
viii) Prepare teachers for further Education and training.

Admission Requirements

The candidate to be admitted must satisfy the following criteria:
A holder of KCSE with a minimum grade of D+ and P1 certificate with a teaching experience of at least 2 years OR a holder of mean grade of „C‟ plain and a P1 certificate
Course Structure and Duration
Diploma in Education (Primary) shall take a minimum period of two (2) years (total of 1620 hrs) of 108 credit factors (CF) drawn from professional courses, subject content areas and instructional materials preparation (Learning Resource Project). The maximum period for a student to complete the course is four years.
Under School Based (Part Time Mode), the schedule of the course will be as follows:
Block 1 in April (4 weeks), Block 2 in August (4 weeks) and Block 3 in December (4 weeks). The three (3) blocks will constitute one academic year. Each academic year will be referred to as a Level e.g. Level one (L1) Level Two (L2) etc.
Course Coding
The courses are coded as follows:
The first abbreviation (P) refers to primary.
The next three letters refer to the subject discipline e.g. EPS – Educational Psychology ,ECI – Curriculum, AGR – Agriculture, CHE – Chemistry etc.
1st digit i.e. zero refers to the level of training i.e. Diploma.
Second digit represents the year of study.
The third digit represents the subject discipline of the course thus: 1- Communication Skills, 2-Curriculum Studies, 3- Foundation Courses, 4- Science, 5- Maths, 6- Social Studies 7- Languages, 8- Computer Studies, 9- Agriculture.
Fourth digit represents the serialization of courses in a subject discipline taught in an academic year

Examination Regulations

All examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII
Grading System
The grading of examinations for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with in Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Diploma Classification
The Diploma classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute No.34 (18).

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION

Rationale
The Postgraduate diploma in Education at Egerton University is a one calendar year programme to prepare graduates who intend to teach in secondary schools, but have not undergone any teacher training. A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (P.G.D.E) is awarded to candidates who satisfactorily complete the one-year programme in Faculty of Education and Human Resources as stipulated in the University Regulations.
Programme Objectives
The PGDE program aims at training students in the theory and practice of Education so as to develop the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for effective and efficient teaching and management in secondary schools or equivalent institutions.
i) To provide the required professional training in order to develop the intellectual and social characteristics of the students to enable them become responsible teachers and leaders in secondary schools.
ii) To provide a basis for advanced training in Education in both professional and specialised subject areas.
iii) To develop the capability of students in conducting research and write a research report in Education.
iv) To prepare students sufficiently for further studies in their areas of interest and ability in Education.

Admission Requirements

The programme is open to students who have received a Bachelor of Science Degree or Bachelor of Arts Degree or equivalent qualification with two teaching subjects from Egerton University or any other recognized institution approved by the Senate. Except for classification of degrees all other postgraduate admission requirements shall apply.
Course Structure and Duration
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme shall extend for a minimum period of one calendar year consisting of two semesters of course work, examination and project and one semester of supervised teaching practice in secondary schools/equivalent Educational institutions. The candidates for Postgraduate Diploma in Education will take professional Education core courses during the first semester of study. In the second semester, the candidates will study five professional Education core courses: special subject methods courses and a research project. In addition they will be allowed to select two additional courses so long as the total load shall not exceed 24 CF. The research project report will be submitted to the Department of Curriculum and Educational Management at the end of the third semester. Teaching practice will be done during the third session in approved secondary schools/equivalent Educational institutions.

Examination Regulations

PGDE classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.

49% and Below – Fail
50 – 59 – Pass
60 – 69 – Credit
70% and above – Distinction
Degree Classification
Degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXIX.
