UHAS Department of Nutrition and Dietetics

Dietetics is an interdisciplinary program that incorporates the sciences of human biology, biochemistry, food, social, as well as business studies. A number of the courses taken in the program are to enable students understand today’s complex nutrition and health issues, and how the body utilizes nutrients and related substances for optimal health throughout the life cycle. The program also prepares students for leadership and management positions with a focus on clinical practice, public health nutrition, the food and pharmaceutical industries, food-service and food-systems management.
Students enter this program with very good passes in General Sciences, Home Economics, and Agricultural Sciences. In the course of the program, they develop knowledge, competencies and skills required of entry level dietetics practitioners required by the Allied Health Professions Council after a successful completion of an accredited internship, and success in the professional examinations. These leads to the fulfillment of long-term goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian with employment opportunities in hospitals and other health care facilities, sports nutrition, corporate wellness programs, hospitality and food service industry, pharmaceutical industry, food and nutrition- related businesses, private practice, community and public health settings, university and medical centers and research areas.
Our Core Mandate
The Department through its astute, dedicated and dynamic faculty, who are also professionals in the fields of Dietetics, Nutrition, and Food science, have a core mandate of producing the best crop of Dietitians in Ghana and beyond. This is being done through strategic teaching approaches, Problem Based Learning (PBL), research, and community service.
