Course Summary

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a highly qualified, competent and confident professional diagnostic radiographer. Diagnostic radiography is a combination of medical science, technology and patient care that plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. In diagnostic radiography, different imaging techniques and sophisticated technologies are used to produce high quality images to aid diagnosis for injury or disease. This is conducted as part of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team. After the completion of this degree programme, there are opportunities for specialisation into many areas of diagnostic radiography. These areas include Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning among others. There is also the opportunity to go into clinical tutorship, academia and private radiography practice.

Course Details

During your time on the programme, you will be supported by a dynamic and competent academic and clinical faculty. Their main role is to assist you to develop into a competent diagnostic radiographer. The teams do this by providing the best possible teaching and learning environment and practices for you to thrive as a student. The four-year programme is covered over eight semesters. In the first year, students will be taken through the fundamentals of radiographic practice including the basic sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and anatomy and physiology. In years two, three and four, students will focus on the core diagnostic radiography modules. These include but not limited to radiographic positioning techniques, radiobiology, patient management, digital radiography (DR) and computed radiography (CR) systems, forensic radiography, CT and MRI scanning, and radiographic image reporting.

Entry Requirements

Qualification Entry requirements
West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Grade A1-C6 in Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Elective Mathematics.
*Diploma in Radiologic Technology Grade point of 2.5 and above; three years radiography work experience.
*Graduate Entry and Transfers Bachelor’s degree in Basic Sciences; Grade point of not less than 2.5 (Second Class Lower Division)
Applicants with international education qualifications Entry requirements for applicants with any of these credentials shall be NAB equivalences of the WASSCE grades in the subjects listed under WASSCE Applicants.

·   IGSCE (Cambridge) – ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels
·   American High School Grade – Grades 12&13 examinations

*Successful candidates will be admitted onto the programme at Level 300 (third year).

Interview Process

All applicants who satisfy the entry requirements will be invited for an interview. Aside the academic entry requirements, this professional course also seeks to recruit students with good communication skills and a caring nature. The interview is conducted in a friendly atmosphere and the interviewers will include members of the academic team and clinical tutors. The interview consists of a range of questions ranging from current affairs to ethical scenario-based questions. Applicants will also be assessed on their knowledge and interpersonal skills. Learning & Assessment

How will I be taught?
The Department of Medical Imaging (Radiography) is committed to developing students with knowledge which directly improves health outcomes and health care for patients. Top-quality teaching relies on academic and clinical expertise of lecturers and clinical tutors. Lectures, tutorials, workshops, presentations and specific group work are the main methods of teaching.
How will I be supported?
We do appreciate the fact that different students have different academic and clinical needs. As a result, each student will be allocated a personal tutor to provide one-on-one support. Faculty and staff of the department and school are available to assist students and provide support and advice.
Feedback
The lecturers and clinical tutors will provide you with feedback on your work and progress in a variety of ways. These will include oral feedback during tutorials, feedback provided during lectures, written and verbal feedback in relation to examinations and you can discuss your overall progress with your personal tutor. During clinical sessions, you will be supported in your progress by your clinical tutors who will provide verbal and written feedback and report on your clinical competency and progress.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are conducted in theory examinations, written assignments, practical examinations, projects, presentations, clinical examinations and clinical assessments.

Employability and Career Prospects

When you complete the degree you will be eligible to register with the Allied Health professions Council (AHPC) as a qualified diagnostic radiographer, which allows you to work in the government or private hospitals in Ghana. There are also career opportunities in academia, industry and research. Successful graduates can also apply for membership of the Ghana Society of Radiographers.
