OVERVIEW

The Quality Assurance Office (QAO) was set up in 2006 to ensure internal quality of the University’s educational programmes and services before the intervention of external bodies such as the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX). The Office, on behalf of the University, develops policies and practices for the assurance, maintenance or enhancement of quality of teaching and learning.

To ensure the highest quality of the educational products and services offered by the University through periodic monitoring, assessment and evaluation

MISSION STATEMENT

Our Mission is to develop, to refine and to continuously apply internal quality enhancement mechanisms systemically across all programmes and services offered by the University to students and staff.

OBJECTIVES

Our objectives are to:

  1. safeguard and improve the academic standards and quality of education in the University;
  2. ensure the integrity of the academic awards of the University; and
  3. develop and sustain a culture of quality seeking and quality assurance among members of the University.

We uphold the following core values – Quality, EfficiencyRelevance and Integrity.

STRATEGIES

The Office uses two (2) main strategies in executing its activities. These are:

  1. Implementation Strategy:
    1. Sensitization of all stakeholders on Quality Assurance (QA) issues;
    2. Establishment of quality assurance desks to facilitate implementation of QA practices at all levels; and
    3. Preparation of Unit-Specific performance standards.
  2. Evaluation Strategy:
    1. Students satisfaction surveys
    2. Employer satisfaction surveys; and
    3. Internal programmes reviews.

 

FUNCTIONS OF QAO

The major functions and duties of the Office include the following:

  • Student Satisfaction Surveys/Students’ Assessment of Courses and Teaching: The Quality Assurance Office (QAO) regularly and systematically organises student satisfaction surveys. These surveys are aimed at giving the students an opportunity to provide feedback on their experiences of individual courses and teaching programmes. In carrying out this task, the QAO designs appropriate tools for collecting views, coordinating data collection activities and analysing the results. Capturing of student experiences and opinions are done by the use of surveys and interviews or any other appropriate methods. The QAO circulates the survey results to teaching units and staff and coordinates the formulation and implementation of strategies to improve on problemtic areas revealed by the evaluation results;
  • Course Assessment: The Office establishes benchmarks and parameters for course assessment for every department to ensure that courses are updated regularly to meet the aims and objectives of the University;
  • Accreditation: The Office vets all documents meant for programme accreditation/re-accreditation before final submission to the body responsible for the accreditation;
  • Supervision, assessment and validation: Analyses of all QA reports at Departmental, Faculty and University levels (students’ course evaluations, external examiner’s reports, external audit reports, etc) and identification of issues arising from them for the attention of the Management;
  • Orientation of newly appointed teaching staff, Heads of Department/Units, Deans et cetera;
  • Monitoring the commencement of lectures at the various campuses of the University;
  • Monitoring the examinations process;
  • Checking and verifying Examination results at the Departments; and
  • Organising workshops/seminars for staff and students.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE YEAR

Among the Office’s achievements for the year are:

  • development of Quality Assurance Handbook covering the activities of Departments/Sections/Units;
  • orgaising a workshop for faculty members on the theme, “Assessment and Test Item Construction”;
  • organising a workshop on the theme, “Requesting NCTE’s Support for the Introduction of New Programmes in Public Tertiary Education Institutions – what is expected”; and
  • facilitating the process for the accreditation/re-accreditation of programmes of various Departments of the University.
