Industrial Liaison

INTRODUCTION

The Industrial Liaison and Career Development Office is a department within the Takoradi Technical University that is charged with the responsibility of co-ordinating industrial attachment/internship programmes and industrial visits (field trips) for staff and students in the University.

GOAL

The cardinal goal of the Department is to ensure a smooth transition of the theoretical knowledge acquired by students in the lecture halls into the World of Work (WoW). The office is also responsible for the placement of staff and students in related industries or organisations to enable them acquaint themselves with current technological transformations in the work environment.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Department are to:

  • help equip staff and students with the practical skills and knowledge in their major fields of study, via practical industrial training;
  • assist staff and students to acquire the behavioural skills appropriate for the World of Work through hands-on-learning programmes;
  • prepare students for job placement after completion of their programmes;
  • encourage students to acquire and practice relevant entrepreneurial skills via practical attachment programmes and guest lessons; and
  • ensure that our students are preferred to all other students for employment opportunities.

STUDENTS’ INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT EXERCISE: INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT LETTER AND ASSUMPTION OF DUTY FORM

For students to get attached to industries for their practical industrial training, letters for the industrial attachment and assumption of duty forms are acquired on-line. This is available to students on the Industrial Liaison portal at the Takoradi Technical University website. Students access the industrial attachment letters and assumption of duty forms using their index numbers and passwords on their registration chit generated by the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Department.

 

PLACEMENT / FOLLOW-UPS

The office, in collaboration with the academic Departments of the University, places students in organisations, companies and industries for industrial practical training. The office arranges follow-up visits to internship sites, co-ordinates assessments, evaluates students and periodically appraises the overall industrial attachment programme.

ASSESSMENT

The Office co-ordinates and helps with the assessment and evaluation of the students on industrial practical training. In this regard, Industry-Based Supervisors are made to complete the Overall Assessment sheet in the students’ log book for each student. The School-Based Supervisors, on the other hand, visit students’ attachment sites, supervise students and complete an assessment sheet based on their competencies, attitudes and behaviours in industry. Students are consequently required to present to their Departments comprehensive reports after every attachment exercise for assessment and grading.

DURATION OF INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT/INTERNSHIP

The total practical industrial attachment programme of six months duration is organised in two phases (end of second semester and end of fourth semester). It is compulsory and a required course for the award of Higher National Diploma (HND); it attracts a total of four (4) credit hours.

Fashion Design Technology, and Competency Based Training (CBT) (Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Interior Design Technology) students undergo practical industrial training during the whole of the fourth semester. This attracts a total of fifteen (15) credit hours.

Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) students also undergo industrial attachment programme for the whole of the third semester for a maximum of fifteen (15) credit hours. Industrial attachment is regarded as a compulsory course, hence, a student is expected to obtain at least a pass in the industrial attachment programme before he/she qualifies for the award of the final certificate.

 

INDUSTRIAL VISITS / FIELD TRIPS

The office collaborates with all the academic Departments within the University on matters regarding industrial visits or field trips. Arrangements are made with organisations that the Departments intend to visit. The Department is written to when arrangements have been finalised to enable students and lecturers embark on the trip. The trips are intended to complement the knowledge students acquire at the lectures.

INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE FOR LECTURERS

The office, in collaboration with the academic departments, arranges placements in industry for lecturers to sharpen their knowledge and skills in their areas of specialisation to enhance effective teaching and learning. Lecturers, after the industrial training, present report(s) to their Department(s) and the Office.

JOB PLACEMENT

Companies and organization interested in engaging the services of graduates of the University contact the Office for the particulars of outstanding students for selection, interview and subsequent engagement.

How to print your Attachment letter and Assumption of Duty Form

NB: Please, it is advisable to use either ‘Mozilla Firefox’, ‘Google Chrome’ or ‘Opera’ Web Browsers to fill the online form.

1. Log in using your Index Number and Password on your registration chit.
2. Click on Students Section -> “Fill form” and fill in relevant details
3. Proceed to print your Attachment letter.
4. Submit the printed letter to the Liaison Office for endorsement.

To obtain your Assumption of Duty Form
1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above in order obtain your Assumption of duty form.
2. Proceed to print your Assumption of duty form.
3. Submit the Assumption of duty form to be endorsed by the Industry-Based Supervisor.
4. Send the endorsed(Signed and stamped) Assumption of duty form to the Liaison Office in person, by email or by EMS.

Placement


 Students are given the option to locate internship sites or organization close to their homes to cut down cost. Those without an option are placed by the Industrial Liaison Unit.  To facilitate the placement of students for attachment exercise, lecturers and liaison officers scout for placement in targeted organization and companies throughout the country to negotiate placement for students.Students can undertake industrial attachment outside Ghana. This is on condition that the office is notified at least four months before start of attachment, for the necessary arrangements related to industrial attachment are made to ensure that the exercise during the period is unhindered.

 

Monitoring and Evaluation

Monitoring and evaluation of students on industrial attachment are done mainly by lecturers and the Industrial Liaison Officer (supervisors) during the attachment period. Supervisors visit all the attachment sites in the country which are divided into zones.

Insurance Policy

All students on industrial attachment are covered by Group personal Accident Insurance against any form of accident during the attachment period.

 

Assessment

The industrial liaison office in collaboration with the various departments assesses students on practical training. In this regard, organizations are made to complete a confidential report form for each student and submit to the liaison office of the polytechnic for coalition and final submission to the departments. The total practical training programme for HND students attracts a total of  4-credit hours.Competency Based Training (CBT) II programme for Civil Engineering students require a total of sixteen (16) credit hours of industrial attachment experience for the fourth semester. Students continue with a three-month (twelve weeks) industrial attachment which attracts a two hour credit as a top up of the sixteen weeks. Students pursuing Bachelor of Technology programmes undergo a total of sixteen (16) credit hours of industrial attachment exercise for the semester.Students write a comprehensive report at the end of their attachment exercise. The report, the daily log sheet and the confidential report from industry are assessed and graded for each student.

Companies and organizations interested in engaging the services of graduates of the Polytechnic contact the Industrial Liaison Office for the particulars of outstanding students for selection, interview and subsequent engagement.

Industrial / Educational Visits

The office collaborates with the four schools and the academic departments within the Polytechnic on all matters of industrial visits.

Introductory Letters for Students’ Research Work

The office assists students with introductory letters to enable them carry out their project work in the companies / industries of their choice.

Industrial Exposure for Lecturers of The Polytechnic

The office in collaboration with the Heads of Departments arranges for industrial attachment for lecturers to upgrade their skills and knowledge in their area of specialization to enhance effective teaching and learning.
