Vision
1. The central purpose of the school is to provide a broad Secondary Education and sound training for the young boys and girls of the country.
2. To turn out students who are disciplined, respectful, responsible, time conscious and co-exist peacefully with others.
3. To implement the goals of Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service to achieve quality pre-tertiary education relevant to the manpower training needs of the country.
Mission
To provide an all round education encompassing skills acquisition, enhanced literacy, numeracy, physical development, sound moral training and spiritual development, which will make students productive and useful to themselves and the entire society and also to instill in the students a sense of patriotism and sacrifice hence the school motto: “Me man nti enye me nti” which in English means – we live not only for ourselves but largely for our country.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Sunyani Secondary School popularly known as SUSEC is one of the products of Ghana Education Trust. It was established in 1960 by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the then Prime Minister of Ghana.
The first batch of students 36, in number, comprising 31 Boys and 5 girls were admitted on Friday 30th October, 1960.
On 13th December, 1960, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah inaugurated the school at a colourful ceremony. The school started with only 3 Teachers and 9 Non-Teaching Staff.
Sunyani Secondary School started as a co-educational Institution but after a short time, people in high places decided to make it a Boys’ school. As a result, the few girls in the school were sent to Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ School. Fortunately the decision was rescinded and the following year, girls were admitted again to the school.
The first Headmaster of the school was the late Mr. P.D. Quartey, a bold Sportsman and adventurer who dared the unknown to come from Accra to Sunyani to start a big programme. He and his staff did a yeoman’s work to lay a solid foundation for great institution to emerge in Brong Ahafo Region.
SCHOOL SYMBOL
The symbol for the school is an “Elephant” it was chosen from the name Sunyani which is the corrupted form of the name “Ason Dwaee” meaning, the place where elephants were killed and skinned by the great hunter and warrior Nana Boahen Korkor the founder of Sunyani traditional area.
MOTTO
The first Headmaster, Mr. P. D. Quartey of blessed memory coined the motto “Me man nti enye me nti” from the statement made in Latin by the great leader Osagyefo Dr. Nkrumah that “A man was born not for himself alone but for his country.”
The present administration has systematically built on the foundation laid by past heroes and has transformed Sunyani Secondary School into a dynamic, indomitable and formidable academic haven for students who want to make a headway in life.
The school has experienced a tremendous and remarkable growth over the years. The teaching staff has increased from four (4) to Ninety-two (92) and non-teaching has also moved from nine (9) to one hundred and five (105). The initial student population of 36 has increased to two thousand six hundred, and sixty one (2661).
The following figures show the number of students who have passed out of Sunyani Secondary School. Among these are Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers Parliamentarians, Heads of institutions and Departments, Teachers, Pastors, Private Businessmen and Women.
