KNUST Takoradi Campus – Details:
The Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has inaugurated its Takoradi City Campus, located at Kansaworado. The newly constructed edifice valued at 21 million 600 cedis was jointly commissioned by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso and the Former Vice-Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis.
The building was constructed with funds from the University’s internally generated funds (IGF) and a loan from the GCB Bank with Antarctic Construction Limited as contractors, assisted by the Works and Development Office, KNUST.
In his address, the Chairman for the occasion, Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, stated that attempts by stakeholders to set up a University in the Western Region is yet to materialise and commended the management of KNUST for siting a campus of the University in the Region.
Nana Nketsiah noted that KNUST had already birthed the University of Mines and Technology and the University of Energy and Natural Resources and expressed his delight that the institution continues to establish campuses in response to the needs of students. He appealed to the Takoradi Municipal Assembly to provide the necessary assistance to the Institute.
Giving the history of the project, the Director of the IDl, Professor Isaac Dontwi, stated that after operating for six years as a faculty and renting, there was the need for a permanent premises to house the Institute.
Professor Dontwi continued that, in November, 2016, therefore Council of the University approved the purchase of lands to build IDL Campuses with the idea of having integrated campuses comprising Tamale, Accra and the Sekondi including an executive campus at Moree.
He stated that the Accra campus has been commissioned and is being used while the Executive Campus at Moree and Akatakyiwa have had their first phase commissioned. He added that when completed these campuses would be used in teaching and research in marine engineering and coastal studies.
Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, Vice-Chancellor, said the Institute has about 700 to 1000 students in the Region and with the construction of a permanent facility, growth of the student numbers will be catered for in future. He stated that the establishment of the University on their soil is a sign of development being brought to their doorsteps through education. He further pledged the University’s support to the community and assured the landlords that their children would enjoy concessionary admission and other benefits as the case is for communities that provide land for the use and need of the University.
He also gave the assurance that the University will employ indigenes of Kansaworodo as part of its corporate social responsibility.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Takoradi Technical University for accommodating the Institute till date and appealed to the Honourable Minister of Railway Development to facilitate the construction of the 10km road to the Institute.
Honorable Joe Ghartey, Minister of Railways Development, in his address, said the government of the President, His Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo, is committed to education and improvement in the lives of citizens and sees education as the pillar for development. Education creates also creates opportunities and in the case of science and technology, it speeds up development.
Hon. Ghartey, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Essikado-Ketan Constituency, assured all of his support and that of the president for the necessary infrastructure to be put in place for Sekondi-Takoradi to become the Centre of education in the country.
