The Kenya Prisons System was introduced in Kenya by the British East Africa protectorate with the enactment of East Africa Prisons regulations in April, 1902. Towards independence, the prisons legislation that was passed in 1960 became effective on 1st February 1963 and has been revised only once. It derives its mandate from the Prisons Act (Cap 90) and Borstal Act (Cap 92) laws of Kenya.
